The following summaries have been affirmed by many Christian communities throughout Christian history and express orthodox Christian teaching. They are the foundational documents that guide our theology.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to the dead.On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. * universal
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. * universal
We believe, love and worship the one and only unchanging, sovereign, and loving God, the Creator and Ruler of all things in heaven and earth. God is manifest in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Gen 1:1,26; Ex 20:2-3; Deut 6:4; 1 Chro 29:11-12; Job 38-41; Ps 90:2; Matt 6:9; 1 Peter 1:2
Jesus Christ, our Lord, is God in the flesh. He is the Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, fully God, fully man, sinless. He died on the cross in our place for our sins, was buried, resurrected from the dead, ascended into heaven, and now sits at the right hand of God the Father, as our Advocate, and will return to judge the living and the dead. Matt 1:18 -23; Luke 1:31-33; John 1:1-18; Acts 1:9-11; Acts 2:22-24; 1 Cor 15; Heb 1:1-3; Rev 5:9-14
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, exalting Christ and convicting us of our sin and need for Jesus Christ. He fully lives in every believer from the moment of salvation. He comforts, teaches and empowers us to live in righteousness. He equips every believer with spiritual gifts for service in the Body of Christ. Matt 1:18; John 14:16-17; John 14:26; John 15:26; John 16:7-14; Acts 1:8; 1 Cor 3:16; 1 Peter 4:10
The Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God to reveal God and His will to man. The Bible has God as its author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error. The Bible is the sole authority for Christian living. Deut 4:1-2; Ps 12:6; Ps 19:7-10; Ps 119:105, 160; Heb 4:12; 2 Tim 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21
Humanity is made in the image of God – created to worship God, to glorify Him and to have dominion over the earth. Sin separates man from God and man is eternally doomed unless he receives salvation in Jesus Christ. Gen 1:26; Ps 8:3-6; Acts 17:26-31; Rom 3:10-18, 23
Since all persons are separated from God by sin and are in need of forgiveness, God offers the free gift of salvation. Each person must individually accept this gift, repent of sin, and place faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Ex 6:2-8; Matt 16:21-26; John 3:15-16; John 17:3; Rom 3:23; Rom 5:1; Rom 6:23; Eph 2:8-9
We believe our true salvation, provided by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ alone, is eternally secure. It is imperishable and no man or circumstance can snatch us out of the powerful hand of God because Jesus Christ has made an everlasting covenant with us. 2 Sam 23:5; John 3:36; John 5:24; John 10:28; John 14:6; 2 Tim 1:12; Heb 7:25; 1 Peter 1:4; 1 John 5:11-13
Every believer is a minister and has direct access to God through the high priest, Jesus Christ. Eph 3:7; Eph 4:11-16; Heb 4:14 -16; Heb 10:19-22
We believe that it is the mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ through a variety of methods. Specifically, we believe that it is consistent with scripture to share Good News by serving and caring for others both locally and abroad in missions. Missions is the idea that through finding ways to serving and care for others with our hands, we open a door to a person’s heart to share God’s grace with our words. Acts 2:42 - 47, James 2:14 - 26
Family, diverse and beautiful, is ordained by God as the foundational institution of human society. Children, from the moment of conception, are to be protected, preserved and valued as a gift of life from God Almighty. Parents are to love, teach, discipline and model biblical truth before their children; children are to honor and obey their parents. All families are welcomed to be a part of our church as we believe that the church creates a spiritual family that often looks different from our traditional family units. As a spiritual family church members are to care for each other, share responsibilities, and work to make each other better followers of our Heavenly Father. Gen 2:18-22; Ex 20:12; Lev 20:13; Deut 6:6-7; Ps 127:3-5; Ps 139:13-16; Prov 22:6; Mark 10:6-9; 1 Cor 7:1-16; Eph 5:21-33
As a beautiful reflection of Christ and His Church, marriage is a covenant commitment of one biological man and one biological woman. The framework of marriage provides for the intimate expression of companionship and sexual relationship according to biblical truths. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage as defined above. Weddings at Sixes Community Church should follow this understanding of marriage. Whenever there is a conflict between the church’s position and any new legal standard for marriage, the church’s statement of faith, doctrines, and biblical positions will govern. Gen 2:18-22; Ex 20:12; Lev 20:13; Deut 6:6-7; Ps 127:3-5; Ps 139:13-16; Prov 22:6; Mark 10:6-9; 1 Cor 7:1-16; Eph 5:21-33
We believe that we should demonstrate love for others, not only toward fellow believers, but also toward those who are not believers, those who oppose us, and those who engage in sinful actions. We are to deal graciously, humbly, gently, and patiently with those who oppose us. God forbids the stirring up of strife, the taking of revenge, or the threat or use of violence as a means of resolving personal conflict or obtaining personal justice. Although God commands us to abhor sinful actions, we are to love and pray for any person who engages in such actions. (Lev. 19:18; Matt. 5:44-48; Luke 6:31; John 13:34-35; Rom. 12:9-10; 17-21; 13:8-10; Phil. 2:2-4; 2 Tim. 2:24-26; Titus 3:2; I Peter 3:8-9; 1 John 3:17-18)
We believe that children are a blessing from the Lord and must be absolutely protected within the church from any form of abuse or molestation. The church has zero tolerance for any person, whether paid staff, volunteer, member, or visitor, who abuses or molests a child. (Ps. 127:3-5; Matt. 18:6, 19:14; Mark 10:14)
Jesus Christ is the head of His Body, the Church. The Body of Christ is composed of believers. The purpose of the Church is to carry out His mission in the world. The Church welcomes all people to participate in the worship and service of the church for the purpose of helping people come to follow Jesus as Lord. Matt 16:15-19; Acts 2:41-42, 47; Rom 12:4-8; 1 Cor 12; Eph 4:10-16; Rev 2&3
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper: Sacraments are Christian practices that are set apart as holy. Although many practices are particular holy and draw us closer to God, Baptism and Communion have become ways for the church to experience God in a special and meaningful way.
Baptism by water follows Christ’s example, symbolizing death, burial and resurrection to new life in Christ. It is an outward sign of an inward grace and serves as a testimony of faith as part of the body of believers. Depending on the appropriate situation, Baptism may be done through immersion or sprinkling.
The Lord’s Supper (or Communion) is an act of obedience and a testimony of faith. It is a reflection of the very supper that Jesus had with His disciples before His death. We believe that the Lord's Supper is a sacrament of our redemption by the death of Jesus Christ and the saving power of His death and resurrection. Self-examination, confession of sins, and thanksgiving should precede participation in the Lord’s Supper. Because self-examination and confession are between a person and God, anyone can take the Lord’s Supper without question (Open-Table). Matt 3:13-17; Matt 26:26-30; Matt 28:19; Acts 16:30-33; Rom 6:3-5; Col 2:12
Our spiritual growth is deeply dependent on being in community with others. It is through these relationships that we experience what it means to be the body of Christ in the world. Membership requires active participation in a local congregation. When we become members, we profess our faith in God, our desire to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, and commit to join with our church communities mission into our world. The vows we make include promises to faithfully participate in the life and ministries of Sixes Community Church through our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness.
God calls individuals, whose lives best exemplify the biblical qualifications of the position of pastor, overseer/elder (leader), ministerial staff and deacon (servant), and teacher to lead the local body. They are selected and affirmed by the local body after prayerful consideration. Leaders are called by God to uphold church doctrine and to live lives worthy of respect. The local church is called to submit to their authority. Acts 6:1-8; Acts 20:28; Phil 1:1; 1 Tim 5:17-22; Titus 1:5-9; Heb 13:7,17)
We believe that the Bible teaches church discipline. God disciplines those He loves (Heb 12). He uses the leadership of the Church to prayerfully administer His discipline (Gal 6:1) according to Scripture (Matt 18:15-18 and 1 Cor 5:1-13). Discipline is administered in hope of restoring the one who has fallen into sin back to a right relationship with God and the Church. Matt 18:15-18; 1 Cor 5:1-13; Gal 6:1; Heb 12)
